12 Easygoing Summer Wines that are Perfect for Sipping in the Sun

Summer is FINALLY here! Long hot summer days need refreshing wines that pair well with lighter foods. Months of quarantine has many of us relishing the summer, wanting to spend more time outdoors with friends and family enjoying summer meals.

Did you know that summer foods pair perfectly with high acidic wines? High acid wines are more invigorating and make better matches with summer fare because they are more vibrant and juicy, which gives them citrusy note characteristics. The less phenological ripeness in fruit means lower sugar and higher acid in the wine.  During the hot summer months, we tend to eat more fruits, vegetables, seafood, salads, and grilled foods, which pair best with lighter wines. Some guidelines to keep in mind when pairing summer wines with food:

  • Match the body of the food with the body of the wine
  • Match the intensity of flavors between wine and food
  • Wine should not overpower the food
  • Wine should be more acidic than food
  • Stay with fresh fruit for dessert
  • Leave the sauces out or match to the sauce (BBQ sauce is exempt from this rule of course!)

Here we introduce 12 easygoing summer wines, broken down into sparkling, summer reds, rosés, and whites that are sure to keep you refreshed while you enjoy your summer meals.
